Don Drake Hired as Head Football Coach

With the retirement of Ennis Head Football Coach Sam Harrell, Ennis ISD received a lot of interest in filling the position. After review of potential candidates, Ennis ISD is excited to announce Don Drake as the new head coach of the Ennis Lions Football Program. Coach Drake currently serves as the athletic director for Ennis ISD, a role he has held for six years, having done an outstanding job in promoting all Ennis ISD athletic programs.

Prior to joining Ennis ISD, Coach Drake served as the head football coach at McKinney Boyd High School for thirteen years, making playoff appearances in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Drake led Boyd to the Area Final in 2010, 2013, 2014 and the State Quarter-Final in 2007.
Personal Coaching honors include, District 9-4A Coach of the Year 2007; District 10-5A Coach of the Year 2010; Dave Campbell’s Gearboss 4A Coach of the Year 2007; UIL Sponsor Excellence Award Nominee 2012, 2013 and Capital One Bank Dallas Coach of the Week 10/22/13.

Prior to becoming the head coach at McKinney Boyd, Coach Drake served as offensive coordinator at McKinney North High School, The Colony High School, and Airline High School.

Drake graduated from Louisiana Tech University and received his Masters Degree from Centenary College of Louisiana.

Coach Drake’s wife, Tricia is an instructional facilitator for EISD. His son, Collin graduated in 2021 from Ennis High and will graduate from The University of Georgia in May; daughter Kelsey graduated EHS in 2023 and will graduate from University of Arkansas in May of 2026; daughter Katy is currently in her junior year at EHS.

With Coach Drake accepting the head football position, the athletic director position will be posted and the district is accepting applications.
